Panel calls to end legal notices in newspapers

Posted: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 12:21 pm

HARTFORD — A panel of lawmakers that’s seeking ways to save towns money is pushing to eliminate a law that requires towns to publish legal notices in daily newspapers.

It’s unclear whether any measure to change the legal notice requirement has the support necessary to clear the General Assembly. A similar proposal last week was moved to the “foot” of the Senate calendar, a procedural move that means it won’t come for a vote anytime soon and likely lacks enough support to pass.

The Municipal Opportunities and Regional Efficiencies Commission, which is chaired by Rep. Timothy D. Larson, D-East Hartford, on Tuesday recommended resurrecting the idea. And House Speaker J. Brendan Sharkey, who created the MORE Commission, said he’s working to determine if there’s enough support in the legislature to change the law.
