Gazette Premium Content Colorado Springs Council OKs new Public Works director

The Colorado Springs City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to confirm Mayor Steve Bach's appointment of Travis Easton as the city's new Public Works director.

Easton, an engineer and former mayor of Monument, will be paid an annual salary of $150,000 and is expected to begin Oct. 1, said Mike Sullivan, the city's Human Resources director.

Easton's name was kept out of the public notice documents, which were part of the City Council's agenda packet, published Aug. 21. Eight of nine council members had met with Easton in advance of the appointment. But the secrecy from the public caused some consternation among council members who said that while they understand a candidate's need for privacy, the name and salary should be released to the public when the candidate is at the doorstep of confirmation.

Easton's name was released for the record Monday but his salary was only revealed to the council and the public Tuesday when council member Jan Martin asked for it.

Public works includes the city's engineering, streets, and traffic and transit divisions, which have a combined budget of about $110 million and 209 employees. Easton has more than 15 years' experience and is currently senior vice president of NV5.

Easton replaces interim director Dave Lethbridge.
